Naughty Potty

I'm not having a good time with house breaking tonight. It has been over 6 times, so far, that I have had to clean a mess from the floor, not including a messy poop. Mostly urine, not not much of it, but I can't seem to encourage him to do his business outside. I guess it doesn't help that it's not the warmest out there. Back to the books for suggestions. Do you have any?

hey...one of the reasons I got an older puppy...lol...

they say to bring him outside AS SOON AS he wakes up from a nap, after he has been playing, after he eats....etc.....

also at regular time, bring him out every 15 mins...and use a key word...Trice's was, "find a spot" Praise him when he does anything outside....and maybe even treats...

Also if you catch him in the act in the house....make a noise, to stop him...and rush him out to finish...

Hope he catches on quick...

Oh the joys of a new puppy... I'm going through the house trining thing too wiht our new puppy "Guber" he's 1/2 bulldog 1/2 jack russel and 100% a handful! His biggest thing is either going up or down stairs to his business. And Every morning there's a treat for us at our bedroom door!!! We're doing the crate thing too, but if you have any suggestions let me know!!

Guber!! I love the name. You will have to send us some pictures.

The crate training hasn't been that bad for Tumnus. We have a huge cage sectioned off so there is just a little space for him. It should be just enough for him/her to lay down and turn around. Any larger he (all dogs are he from this point on) will use a far corner to do his nasty. We found that out the hard way. We used boxed to fill the space and he happened to climb onto one and pooped there. He also has a couple of favourite toys in there and we make it a happy experience to go in. Never put him in just after scolding. We all were sent to our rooms for grounding but the same doesn't work for dogs.
To get them used to the crate trying placing Guber in there for short periods while you stand and do things around the crate. Make the first few times short and slowly build the time he spends there. He'll soon realise it's safe and his spot to relax.
One final thing, and this is the toughest. At night, he will whine, and a lot. Do not go to Guber while he is whining otherwise you will reinforce this behaviour. "Hey when I whine someone comes and pets me.-slobber slobber slobber" The trouble we have is knowing when it's whining for attention or to go do his business. You'll have to be the judge of that and you'll get used to his schedule. For us Tumnus goes to bed at 12:00 after playing for while. Of course he goes outside before going to his crate. We turn on the TV sound real low to help sooth him. Then around 3-4:00 he whines and needs to go out. After he's done his doogie he goes back to the crate until 7:00. We also take him out then and once again before we go to work. In short, unlike this comment, it's a lot of work, but the pay off is great.

Hope this helps!

I guess we were spoiled with Russ he was pretty much trained when we got him, Guber is getting better though the last few nights he's awakened me with his little cries at about 4am and has done his thing outside. It's just a constant paying attention when he's out of the cage and catching him in the act. I've also noticed with him he relies on Russ a little...he dosen't like to go out alone he waits for his "big brother". Which is actually helping in the process because Russ has gotten to know his signs and alerts us as to when Guber should go out...
I've got pic's posted on my bog if you want to check the little guy out!
